Deputy Minister of Defense of Russia Yunus-Bek Yevkurov awarded the Order of Suvorov to the Russian group of troops in Syria. The honorary award was awarded for “merit in ensuring the security of the state, heroism, courage and dedication” shown by the group’s personnel during the operation “to maintain international peace”, reported press service of the Ministry of Defense.
“The entire personnel of the group, who have carried out combat and special missions in Syria for eight years, are an example of service to the Fatherland and with full dedication fulfill all the tasks assigned by the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Armed Forces,” Yunus-Bek Yevkurov said during his speech. The award ceremony took place on the territory of the Russian Khmeimim airbase in the Latakia region.
The Defense Department also reported that the assistant to the commander of the group of troops in Syria for work with believers, Archpriest Igor Lyubchenko, was given the icon “The Savior Not Made by Hands.” Ministry of Defense earlier called the image of the main icon of the Russian armed forces.
On September 30, 2015, by decision of Russian President Vladimir Putin, an air force group of the Aerospace Forces was formed at the Syrian air base of Khmeimim. Its goal was to destroy the militants of the Islamic State banned in Russia.
