Yeni Şafak: CIA threatened Turkish businessmen over trade with Russia

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) threatened businessmen in Turkey for selling real estate to Russians, claims Turkish newspaper Yeni Safak.
According to the publication, a CIA representative in Turkey called officials of construction companies involved in housing purchases with Russian companies. “The CIA officer asked housing businessmen questions such as: “How many houses have you sold to the Russians? In what currency did you receive payment? What channel did they pay through? Did you take the money out of your hands or did you pay through the bank?” the newspaper writes.
In addition, US Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Adewale Adeyemo sent a letter to the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (TÜSİAD), Turkey’s largest business association, warning about the consequences of cooperation with Russia. Later, US officials held meetings with TÜSİAD members.
After the start of a special military operation in Ukraine, the Turkish government announced its unwillingness to join the sanctions against Russia. On August 11, Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Donmez said that the country would also not join the sanctions against Russia in the energy sector.
On August 21, the Turkish Ministry of Finance and Treasury promised the United States to prevent Russian citizens or organizations from circumventing Western sanctions. Deputy Finance Minister Yunus Elitas said Turkey “opposes Russia’s invasion of Ukraine” but refrains from joining Western sanctions on Moscow, which remains a key supplier of natural gas and crude oil.
