Yaroslavl Governor supported the idea of renaming Rostov – Kommersant

The governor of the Yaroslavl region, Mikhail Evraev, supported the idea of renaming Rostov to Rostov the Great. He reported this in his Telegram-channel.
“Rostov needs to officially receive its full and familiar name – Rostov the Great. We have been working on this task for more than a year, and it is important to bring it to its logical conclusion,” wrote Mr. Evraev.
The governor said the regional government has formed an organizing committee for the renaming, which includes more than 140 people, including officials.
“The Organizing Committee is preparing a package of documents on renaming for submission to the Yaroslavl Regional Duma, after which our parliamentarians will send a request to change the name of the city to the State Duma. The federal law on the renaming of Rostov may be adopted next year,” the governor added.
On August 10, stationary points for collecting signatures for the renaming of Rostov were opened in the city. The authors of the idea of power are called the Public Chamber of the Rostov Municipal District. Meanwhile, the renaming has its opponents. In particular, Alexander Melnik, Candidate of Historical Sciences, said that Rostov had never been called Veliky in its more than a thousand-year history, and local historians of the 19th century came up with this definition to distinguish the city from Rostov-on-Don.
