YandexGPT is undergoing training - Kommersant FM

Yandex presented its answer to ChatGPT – the Russian corporation has implemented a language model in its virtual assistant, and thanks to the Alisa neural network, it can now write texts and search for information at the user’s request. The function is already available in the Yandex app, browser, smart speakers and assistant-enabled TVs.

True, the technology is still imperfect. “Kommersant FM” tried to set several simple tasks for “Alice”, and this is what came of it.

Kommersant FM editor Ilya Sizov compared the work of one of the most progressive language neural networks – ChatGPT – and a new product from Yandex. According to him, the advantage was not on the side of domestic development:

“As soon as you open a dialogue with “Alice”, you are honestly warned that she does not understand the context. One request, one response. You can’t ask her any clarifying questions, and this is probably just the main feature of chatbots with artificial intelligence, that is, they very plausibly imitate human speech and live dialogue.

Over and over again I asked “Alisa” to offer me three vacation options for two weeks. On the first attempt, she said: “Of course, I can offer three options for a two-week vacation,” that is, the answer is correct in form, but not in essence. For the second time, she offered to relax in Antalya, that is, she voiced only one option and decided to stop there. And the third attempt was more successful, I was given three alternatives: a trip to the sea, a sightseeing tour and active recreation, but in the most general terms.

In addition, “Alice” does not answer all questions. It seems that the system is simply crammed with a list of stop words to which it reacts.

In general, this toy looks more like a very raw demonstration of the capabilities of the Yandex language model. And while the dialogues with the usual scripted “Alice” seem even more interesting.

Yandex developers note that the launch of YandexGPT is only the first step, and in the future, Alice “will become smarter.” The corporation also said that they would implement similar solutions in their other products, such as search.

Bitrix24 neural network expert Alexander Serbul welcomes this approach, but warns that the further development of YandexGPT will take a lot of money and time:

“These are very expensive toys. In the West, to train such networks, large computing power, hundreds of thousands of servers and a lot of processor time are used. For the development of neural networks, there must be a large investment.

In addition, Russian is an order of magnitude more difficult than English. Yes, and developments in this direction, we can say, are in their infancy, they only started a few years. Investments in this science, in language, in machine learning for the Russian language are much less. We need dictionaries, we need a lot of markup work. And the West has been successfully investing in this for decades.

For the development of this industry in Russia, years of systematic work are needed, in particular, in computational linguistics, in order to achieve the same quality as abroad.”

Some Western entrepreneurs and IT experts, meanwhile, look at the advancement of neural networks with apprehension. At the end of March, Steve Wozniak, Elon Musk and thousands of other experts signed an open letter, which urged developers to pause the development of artificial intelligence technologies like ChatGPT. True, no one responded to this recommendation.
