Smart speaker “Alice” can turn on the microphone for a few seconds even when the user did not call her name, informed Yandex press service after the service code leak.
“Last week, fragments of the program code of some Yandex services were discovered in the public domain,” the company said. “We are continuing our internal investigation into the incident and feel it is important to share the first results.”
It is reported that turning on the microphone without asking the user is one of the speaker’s test algorithms, which only worked in its beta version for employees. The function of hidden microphone activation for listening to the speech of a person who did not even contact Alice is necessary, as Yandex explained, in order to reduce the number of false positives and improve the quality of assistant activation.
