Nikita Khabarov, a super heavyweight from Yakutia, received a bronze medal at the Ivan Yarygin Cup in freestyle wrestling, becoming the first Yakut wrestler to achieve such success in the heaviest weight.
Khabarov began his journey at the tournament in Krasnoyarsk from the 1/8 finals, where in the last seconds he defeated the Turkish representative Hakan Buyukçingil with a score of 5:4. In the quarterfinals, the Yakut athlete defeated the Russian student champion Gamzat Alizhudinov from Dagestan.
Khabarov then met with the winner of the European Games in Minsk, Anzor Khizriev from St. Petersburg. Khabarov earned his first points for his opponent’s passivity. In the second period, when the Yakut wrestler was more active, the judge awarded points to the opponent, which became the decisive moment of the match. Khabarov made a risky move, trying to attack his opponent’s legs, but he was caught with a counterattack. The match ended with a score of 1:3 in favor of Khizriev, who advanced to the final.
Khabarov had to fight for the bronze medal, but his opponent was injured in the previous match, and the bronze medal went to the Yakut athlete without a fight.
