Xi Jinping: Russia and China should jointly protect regional security

Moscow and Beijing must protect the interests of regional security and the interests of developing countries, Chinese leader Xi Jinping said at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

During this bilateral meeting with Xi Jinping, Putin also declaredthat the trade turnover between Russia and China by the end of 2022 will exceed a record $200 billion. Putin praised Beijing’s “balanced position” in connection with the Ukrainian crisis. The Chinese leader, in turn, said that China ready together with Russia “to play a leading role in putting such a rapidly changing world on a path of sustainable and positive development.”
The first face-to-face meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State in three years is being held on September 15-16 in Samarkand. It is expected that several issues will be discussed at it, including those related to strengthening the organization’s potential in the field of ensuring security and stability, strengthening economic ties, as well as issues of developing transport interconnection.
In addition to Xi Jinping, Putin also intends to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and heads of other states on the sidelines of the SCO.
