The US Department of Justice is considering allowing WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to plead guilty to a reduced charge of mishandling classified information. Informed sources spoke about this on Wednesday, March 20.

According to The Wall Street Journal, such a move would open up the possibility of a deal that would end the protracted legal saga. However, for now the negotiations are in limbo and may come to naught.

At the same time, the wife of Australian journalist Stella Assange warned that American authorities could secretly remove the WikiLeaks founder from a military airfield in the UK in a matter of hours if a British court agrees to his extradition.

Earlier, lawyer Edward Fitzgerald said that Julian Assange, if extradited to the United States, may face denial of access to fair justice by the American authorities. For this reason, the lawyer urged the High Court of London not to extradite the journalist to Washington.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted that the situation around journalist Julian Assange has become a disgrace to Western democracy. The politician recalled that the Australian “brought to world public opinion the truth about the secret actions of the American intelligence services.”
