WSJ: Russia is afraid of losing its influence in Africa after Prigozhin’s rebellion

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Russian authorities are afraid of losing their influence in a number of countries in Africa and Asia after the rebellion of the Wagner PMC units, in connection with which Moscow sent several delegations of diplomats to clarify all the nuances of further cooperation.
In particular, the publication points out that the Kremlin, which has denied links with PMC mercenaries for years, stepped up diplomatic activity immediately after the rebellion attempt to assure partners in Africa and the Middle East that the “operations” that were previously carried out by the forces of the “Wagnerites” will be continued, but under different leadership.
It is specified that representatives of the Russian Foreign Ministry flew to Syria, the Central African Republic and Mali for this purpose, where they held relevant consultations.
“The Wagner PMC helped Russia build its influence, and the government doesn’t want to give it up,” said John Peter Pham, a former US special envoy for the Sahel region in West Africa.
