WP: Ukrainian military spoke about the dire consequences of an attempted counteroffensive

The Ukrainian military, who were injured during an attempted counteroffensive in the Kherson region, told The Washington Post reporters about the heavy losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and also complained that their army was lagging behind the Russian Armed Forces in terms of technology.

The newspaper describes soldiers with shrapnel wounds, crippled arms, crushed joints and lost limbs, who spoke of the unenviable situation in which their units found themselves in the early days of the offensive.

The military said that they lacked artillery, and the “technological gap” with the Russian army complicates the situation.

The situation at the front, as follows from the publication, “is so sensitive that the Ukrainian military leaders forbade journalists to visit the front line.” For this reason, some of the injured agreed to communicate with journalists only anonymously.

One of them said that Russian drones revealed the positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces from a height of more than a kilometer, and the Ukrainian military was unable to hear their movements when Russian “hacking tools” captured Ukrainian UAVs.

The second admitted that the Ukrainian troops had to “carefully dose out” the use of ammunition and that they had problems hitting the target.

“Denis <...> said that almost all members of his 120-man unit were injured, ”the article says.

A Ukrainian military official said he doubted such a counter-offensive “would be worth the losses it caused.”

Earlier, the head of the Russian Defense Ministry, Sergei Shoigu, said that the purpose of the “counteroffensive” of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is to create the illusion of the ability of the Kyiv regime to resist the Russian army. The Ministry of Defense announced on August 31 that the Russian Armed Forces had destroyed more than 1,700 Ukrainian soldiers in two days who had tried to attack in the Nikolaev-Krivoy Rog and other directions.
