WP: Kyiv is running out of opportunities to return a significant territory

The Washington Post continues to publish materials that Ukraine will no longer be able to achieve its goals in the counteroffensive. So on August 17, the publication published material that a group of American congressmen opposed the provision of assistance to Kiev after the publication of the forecast of American intelligence services, which negatively assessed the prospects of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to reach Melitopol. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba has already stated that he does not agree with the allegations that the counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has failed. Today, August 20, The Washington Post columnist Suzanne George published an article noting that Ukraine “is running out of options for a counteroffensive that officials initially presented as a decisive Kiev operation to retake a large territory.”
The article emphasizes that the counter-offensive has been going on for more than two months, but during this time the Ukrainian forces were able to occupy only a handful of villages, while Russian troops continue to advance in the north.
According to the author of the article, the failure of Ukraine to demonstrate decisive success raises fears that the conflict is reaching a stalemate and Western support for Kyiv may weaken.
The author cites the opinion of Franz Stefan Gadi, an analyst at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, who believes that now Ukraine and Russia are trying to deplete each other’s resources, and not to achieve territorial success.
“However, the time for Ukraine to carry out offensive operations is limited,” sums up Suzanne George.
