The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted an illegal collection of information about US senators, according to the Washington Post.
The agency reportedly “illegally searched foreign surveillance information for the names of a US senator and a state senator,” the newspaper writes, citing court documents.
It is also reported that one of the employees collected information on the state judge. At the same time, the names of those who fell under the illegal collection of information were not disclosed. It is only specified that the collection of information took place in June last year. The report says that the Department of Homeland Security of the US Department of Justice considered that such acts exceeded the powers of the FBI.
“Revealing this information could further complicate the administration’s efforts to update a major spyware program that has already faced bipartisan opposition,” the Washington Post wrote, referring to Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Act, which allows law enforcement agencies access to emails and other communications.
