Polyansky explained why the Russian Federation is more important than Ukraine in terms of food security

Russia plays a much more important role in terms of global food security, said Dmitry Polyansky, First Deputy Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
As an example, he cited statistics on grain production in Russia and Ukraine in 2022. The harvest in Ukraine amounted to about 55 million tons of grain, of which 47 million tons were exported, and the share of wheat was about 17 million tons.
“In Russia, 156 million tons of grain were harvested, of which we exported 60 million tons, including 48 million tons of wheat,” the diplomat said. He also emphasized that Russian exports were carried out in spite of the obstacles artificially created by the West.
Thus, according to him, the share of the Russian Federation in the global wheat market is 20%, while Ukraine does not even have 5%.
“So who plays a big role in global food security,” Polyansky addressed the representatives of the UN member states present at the meeting. He also recalled that in his words he did not mention fertilizers, which further enhance Russia’s role in global food security.
He also accused those who accuse Moscow of provoking “global famine” of inaction regarding the provision of gratuitous supplies of Russian mineral fertilizers under the auspices of the UN. Polyansky recalled that out of 262,000 tons of products blocked in Latvia, Estonia, Belgium and the Netherlands, only two batches were sent – 20,000 tons to Malawi and 34,000 to Kenya.
