‘Worst heat wave’ in history takes Southeast Asia by surprise

April and May tend to be the hottest months in Southeast Asia, with temperatures rising before the monsoon rains bring coolness. But this year, the heat wave has reached levels never seen before in most countries in the region, including in the tourist hubs of Thailand and Vietnam.
Thailand had the hottest day on record with 45.4 degrees Celsius on April 15, while neighboring Laos peaked at 43.5 degrees Celsius for two consecutive days in May and Vietnam’s record was broken in in early May from 44.2 degrees Celsius. The data is based on an analysis of weather station data by climatologist and weather historian Maximiliano Herrera.
Herrera described what was happening as “the most brutal never-ending wave of heat” that continued until June. On June 1, Vietnam broke the record for the hottest June day on record with a temperature of 43.8 degrees Celsius, 29 days into the month before the end of the month.
In a recent World Weather Attribution (WWA) report, an international coalition of scientists said the April heat wave in Southeast Asia was a 200-year event that would have been “nearly impossible” without anthropogenic climate change. Local residents were caught off guard by such a temperature, writes CNN.
