Doctors found worms in the spine of a resident of the Omsk region
Doctors during the examination found worms in the spine of a 60-year-old man from the Omsk region. This was reported in the press service of the Ilizarov National Research Center for Traumatology and Orthopedics.
It is known that the man is engaged in animal husbandry. He went to the doctors complaining of weakness in his legs, limited mobility in the thoracic spine, decreased sensitivity from the navel level, and a mass that appeared on his back. After examinations, doctors diagnosed spinal stenosis and a purulent abscess in the thoracic spine.
During the biopsy, it turned out that there were threads of helminth worms in the abscess. The final diagnosis was “Echinococcal osteomyelitis of the spine”. This is a fairly rare case of a long-term chronic disease, it develops when a person is infected with one of the types of tapeworms.
Parasites can enter the body with water or food that contains their eggs, as well as from infected animals. The man will be treated by specialists from Kurgan and St. Petersburg.
