Since the beginning of the war, the most serious threat to… the regime has come not from democratically minded liberals, endangered species, but from right-wing nationalists… We are now witnessing a power struggle between Putin and the man who made his name doing the dirty work for Russia… Regardless of the one who wins is hardly to be expected (appearance.— “b”) a soon more politically open, geopolitically moderate Russia… Instead, we can assume more instability in large areas of the former Soviet Union… Finally, the unrest in Russia is a major strategic headache for China. The war in Ukraine has brought certain advantages to Beijing. America’s distraction is one of the main ones… President Xi Jinping needs a friendly, relatively strong Russia to challenge American power in Europe, while China expands its influence in Asia. He has a lot to lose if Russia slides into civil war or if it is humiliated in Ukraine.
While Chinese experts see no evidence to link the open confrontation between Wagner and the Russian military to Western intervention, they warn that Western media may be exploiting Russia’s internal conflict to their advantage. “Western media can hardly describe the Ukrainian army’s counter-offensive and its slow advance as a ‘victory’, but they will seize the opportunity to exaggerate Russia’s internal divisions and hint that Russia is finished,” writes… former journalist and blogger Ming Jingwei. Raising the hype around Prigozhin’s “rebellion”, creating the illusion that there are many internal contradictions in Russia, that the “building is collapsing” is the latest approach in the Western press to vilify Russia and try to undermine the unity of Russian society.
Military analysts are lost in conjecture about the consequences of the failed uprising of the Wagner PMC and its leader Yevgeny Prigozhin. For an outstanding day and a half, Russia was in danger of an armed coup, and President Vladimir Putin promised to punish the Wagner fighters moving towards Moscow and occupying one city after another along the way. However, much remains unclear, and experts warn that the uprising itself is unlikely to be without consequences. Vladimir Putin will have to cope with the consequences of the most serious challenge to his authority since he came to power in 2000, following a series of dizzying events that the whole world watched carefully – and nervously – and Ukraine rejoiced.
Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin, who is not shy of expressions, apparently goes unharmed to Belarus. However, he most likely made himself the main target: “Putin does not forgive traitors.
