Two-time world wheelchair fencing champion Nikolai Lukyanov told how participation in sports competitions helps a person with a disability adapt to society, writes RIAMO. He noted that people should not be afraid of sports, it is vigorous activity and movement that will give a person with disabilities a chance to find a common language with others.
The athlete spoke about his thorny path to success. When he was five years old, and he was in a rehabilitation center after an injury, the future champion was embarrassed to go out into the street and the views of people.
“I thought that suddenly they would think or say something about me. But really, people don’t really care.” Nikolai Lukyanov emphasized.
A few years later, when the champion brought a bronze medal from the Wheelchair Fencing World Cup in Poland, in his hometown they started talking about Lukyanov as a winner. At that moment, the athlete realized that he was a normal person who could benefit society. Moscow has the necessary infrastructure for doing Paralympic sports. The champion goes there for training.
