The Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that FIFA and UEFA cannot block the work of the Super League tournament, which was planned to bring together the leading clubs on the planet. The ban on holding such competitions has been declared illegal. The court finds that officials of international federations are abusing their dominant position. Does this mean that the Super League will still be able to emerge as an independent top tournament? Kommersant FM sports commentator Vladimir Osipov looked into it.
At first glance, those who created the Super League can open champagne. FIFA and UEFA are wrong, the court confirmed this. Moreover, he ruled that the actions of the helmsmen of world football contradict the laws on competition and freedom of provision of services. So now FIFA and UEFA cannot ban the scandalous project. But, as it turns out, the court’s decision does not mean that the Super League has been given the green light, says Sergei Alekseev, chairman of the Russian Lawyers Association’s commission on sports law:
“Courts of state jurisdiction, which is the European Court, are on a different plane than international sports law, which directly regulates these social relations. And it does not directly affect the jurisdiction of FIFA and UEFA.”
Moreover, UEFA immediately responded to the court’s decision in the Super League case. Officials assure that the verdict will not affect the system of football tournaments in Europe. The organization said in an official statement that the court’s decision “does not constitute an endorsement or approval of the so-called Super League, and UEFA is confident in the reliability of its rules and that they comply with all European laws.” So the officials will continue to stick to their line, and they have serious support, football manager Yuri Belous is sure:
“When the first attempt to create a Super League took place, even ordinary fans opposed it. Many came to the stadiums to demonstrate. This will be a league for the elite. But average football countries, including Russia, will never get into this Super League. We won’t be permanently excluded from European football.”
In addition, FIFA and UEFA are trying to set up the football calendar so that the top teams have no free time at all for any other meetings. Officials plan to fill even the free year between the European Championship and the World Cup with the world championship among club teams, where they will pay €50 million just for participation. And in the Champions League, the teams have serious income. So everything is fine with the clubs’ earnings even without the Super League.
Despite this, the football oppositionists, of course, will not give up trying to change the situation, but even if they succeed, it will only interfere with world football, Dmitry Bulykin, who has played in European clubs for many years, told Kommersant FM:
“If the Super League appears, a very bad situation will arise in football. Everyone will begin to pull the blanket over themselves, there will be disqualifications everywhere, players will be lured away, inflating fees.”
At the moment, there are only two clubs in the Super League – Real Madrid and Barcelona. The remaining teams that tried to join the Spanish football giants in 2021 have left the project and are unlikely to return.
This is especially true for English clubs. The fact is that in Britain a ban on the participation of teams in unauthorized tournaments should come into force in the near future. After the law comes into force, you can forget about the Super League, because without the EPL teams, hardly anyone will need the ambitious project.
