Windshield wipers from Kenya will appear in Russia: the decision was called strange

The snow will be shoveled by Africans who have “never seen it”

10 thousand Kenyans will come to Russia to work. According to the representative of the State Chamber of this African country, Hussein Mohamed, their employment has already been agreed upon with Moscow. It is not specified in what specific field the migrants will work. Meanwhile, it is clear that they do not speak Russian, are not adapted to our living conditions, and have never even seen snow. So why should Kenyans move to an unfamiliar frosty country? Director of the Institute of Socio-Economic Research of the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, Alexei Zubets, believes that nothing good will come of this.

“I can’t imagine where citizens from Kenya will work in Russia,” Professor Zubets told MK. “We must understand that Kenya is a hot country, and Russia is northern. I will be extremely surprised if Kenyans are used in the construction of, say, oil and gas pipelines in the Far North. It is unlikely that they are capable of such work. Use them in Moscow, for example, for public works? Yes, they had never seen snow in their lives. The only place where there is snow is Mount Kilimanjaro. However, Kenya is not just a poor agricultural country. The IT industry is quite developed there. On the other hand, Kenya is an English-speaking country. It is one of the few African countries where English is spoken. It is quite obvious that they do not speak Russian. It is unknown how this problem will be solved. Why do we need English-language wipers? I do not quite understand. There are a lot of mysteries in this topic. Meanwhile, people involved in construction said that the best foreign workers are North Koreans.

-Because of discipline?

-Yes. They have iron discipline, absolute control and a work ethic. People understand perfectly well that they work in another country. Plus, they are not spoiled by salaries. Their labor is inexpensive. Meanwhile, in this sense, we have problems with immigrants from Central Asia. But even here it is not clear why we need Kenyans.

-What kind of specialists will come to us: highly qualified or not?

-This is a big question. I’m afraid that it will be unskilled workers who will be imported. If we talk about Moscow, then, let’s say, IT specialists are not needed here. The capital needs utility workers. But recruiting janitors from tropical Africa to shovel snow is strange. I’d like to see what this would look like in practice. If we assume that people from Kenya were recruited for a specific enterprise, then this is more or less logical. Kenya, as I already said, is not a completely backward country and you can find enough qualified workers there. But if personnel are recruited for a specific plant, then it is assumed that specialists with technical training are properly qualified. True, such specialists can be found in Asia, Iran, and North Korea, where there is a very large volume of trained personnel. After all, China is currently suffering from colossal unemployment. This is their biggest problem.

-If Russia needs qualified personnel, then why not hire the Chinese?

-China has long been an expensive labor force. Such times are long gone. Still, employees from this country could be useful to us in the labor market.

-How much will Kenyans be paid?

-It depends on what they do. Kenya is a poor country. It is clear that workers from an African country will be paid less than Russian citizens. But if we talk about public works, then, I think, janitors from Kenya will receive the same amount as janitors from, for example, Tajikistan. In Russia there is now a shortage of janitors and they earn 60-70 thousand rubles a month. This is $600-700, which is quite decent money. I think that for such a salary there will be a queue of Kenyans lining up to become Moscow janitors.

-But is it really impossible to find people in Russia for that kind of money?

-Take the same Transbaikalia, Trans-Urals. There are huge territories there, and people work for much less money. They will be happy to work for 60-70 thousand rubles in Moscow as janitors. In general, the idea of bringing Kenyans to Russia to work sounds dubious, and I don’t believe that anything will come of it.
