The World Court in Moscow imposed a fine of 1.5 million rubles on the Wikimedia Foundation. in the case of non-deletion of information related to the military operation in Ukraine. The Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation considers the published information to be false.
The decision in the administrative case was announced by Timur Vakhrameev, the justice of the peace of the judicial district No. 422 of the Tagansky district of Moscow. The Foundation was found guilty under Part 2 of Art. 13.41 of the Code of Administrative Offenses (non-deletion of information to be deleted). According to Interfax, the defender of Wikimedia asked the court to stop the proceedings, stating procedural violations and the absence of elements and events of the crime. According to the foundation, the controversial information was based on information from the media and international organizations recognized in Russia.
The fine was Wikimedia’s fifth in 2023. The total amount of fines is 5.6 million rubles.
Mintsifra head Maksut Shadayev earlier this week informedthat in Russia there are no plans to block Wikipedia yet. He noted that now the country is developing the Knowledge portal, which is called an analogue of Wikipedia.
