Why Claudia Goldin won the Nobel Prize in Economics

The Nobel Committee awarded the Prize in Economics of the Swedish National Bank in memory of Alfred Nobel to the American Claudia Goldin, Ph.D. and professor at Harvard University. She received the award for “deepening understanding of the role of women in the labor market.”

Goldin’s research interests include economic history, economics of education, and labor markets. In 1989, she became the first woman to be appointed to Harvard’s economics department. Most of her scientific works are devoted to analyzing the causes of gender inequality in the economy. As noted in a press release from the Nobel Committee, Goldin was able to collect enough data to demonstrate how the gap in income and employment between men and women has changed over 200 years of American history.
