For many consumers, the price peaks reached by the new generation iPhones are a stunner. The iPhone 14 costs 10% more than the thirteenth of the name it replaces. From year to year, Apple has increased its prices, since the release of the very first iPhone, billed at 650 euros – a less versatile model, it is true, than modern smartphones. But in the past, these price increases meant innovation. The iPhone X, for example, was shocking with its stratospheric prices, but its format contrasted radically with that of its predecessors. Not so with the new standard iPhone, which sports the exact same design and, for only the second time in Apple smartphone history, does not feature a new processor. So how can this price jump be explained?

Apple’s fault?

To answer this question, we can rely on an index: in the United States, iPhone prices have not changed. According to Daniel Ives, senior analyst at Equity Research, “ the main factor of change is the appreciation of the dollar against the euro “, an analysis confirmed by his colleague Benedict Evans, an independent analyst. Seen from cash registers across the Atlantic, the 910 euros that the French paid in 2021 for the purchase of an iPhone 13 are now worth much less. Daniel Ives also sees a second factor, which weighs less however: transport. “ Logistics costs increase for a device whose parts come from different parts of the world », he advances.

You now have to pay 1,020 euros to afford a standard iPhone 14. A price that seems all the more difficult to swallow since, with this new generation of telephones, Apple is abandoning the small and less expensive model, the iPhone mini, which until now was a less expensive gateway into the market. world of the brand’s high-end models.

Competition more attractive than ever

The iPhone 13 mini, however, still remains in the catalog, at the unchanged price of 810 euros, still constituting a recommendable choice, considering the few improvements that the fourteenth generation brings. Its compact format is particularly practical and pleasant. Users who prefer a large screen still have the option of opting for an iPhone 12, released two years ago, also sold for 810 euros, and whose performance remains quite convincing.

The prices of these two old models nevertheless remain very high, contrary to the practice which wants the old catalog to be substantially depreciated each year, and knowing that the average price of a smartphone sold in France is, For yearsslightly below 450 euros.

For this price, we can afford an Android model, certainly a little less well equipped, but almost as versatile, while nothing exists at Apple for this sum: you have to pay at least 560 euros for the iPhone. entry level offered by the brand, the SE model released in 2022 and whose price has just increased by 30 euros. Its equipment is aging and its value for money questions.
