From July 24 to August 20, 2023, about 1.5 million new cases of coronavirus infection were registered worldwide. This is 63% more than in the previous 28 days. These are the data of the World Health Organization, published on Thursday, August 31.
The number of deaths from COVID-19 over the same period increased by 48%, exceeding 2 thousand, the WHO emphasized.
At the same time, the reduction in the scale of testing and reporting around the world prevents the formation of an accurate epidemiological picture, experts of the organization warned.
In a number of Russian regions, an increase in the incidence of coronavirus infection was also recorded. On August 30, Irina Kataeva, head of the epidemiological surveillance department of the Rospotrebnadzor Office for St. Petersburg, said that in the 34th calendar week, compared to the previous one, there was an increase in cases by 14%. If we take four weeks into the review, the increase amounted to about 28%.
At the same time, US Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel said that China’s policy has led to a high death rate from COVID-19. According to the diplomat, China’s policy not only hindered an effective real-time response, but also led to the death of countless people.
