WHO declares the need for a humanitarian corridor to Gaza

The World Health Organization (WHO) is working with partners to open a humanitarian corridor into Gaza – seven major hospitals have run out of supplies. This was stated by the official representative of the organization Tarik Yasharevich, reports TASS.

WHO will use $1 million to purchase medical supplies to treat up to 500 patients. According to Yašarević, as of October 9, six medical workers were killed in Gaza, and four more doctors were injured. Eight healthcare facilities and nine ambulances were damaged.

TASS also quotes the official representative of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Jens Larke, who said that “since Saturday, four schools have been damaged in Gaza.” More than 187.5 thousand people have already left their homes. Due to ongoing fighting, further population displacement is expected.

In addition, Israel has limited the supply of electricity to Gaza to three to four hours a day, with the local power plant remaining the only source of electricity. There is a risk that she “could be left without fuel in a few days.” The water cut “affects more than 610,000 people in Gaza and will lead to a serious shortage of drinking water,” Larke added.

“For their part, Palestinian armed groups fired thousands of rockets and mortars at Israel, some of which hit major population centers,” an OCHA spokesman concluded.

On October 7, Hamas began military operations against Israel. The Israeli Army (IDF) responded by launching Operation Iron Swords, and the Israeli government announced that the country had entered a state of war. On October 9, the IDF announced the restoration of control over all populated areas of Israel and the transition to the phase of the complete destruction of Hamas. Israel reports daily strikes against Hamas-linked targets in the Gaza Strip.

The total number of deaths in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has already exceeded 1500 people.
