WHO warns of growing risk of infections in Gaza Strip
The risk of the spread of infectious diseases is growing in the Gaza Strip, wrote the Head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Ghebreyesus, on the social network X. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
According to the head of WHO, Gazans are leaving their homes en masse for the south of the region, some have already changed several places of residence, and hospitals are overcrowded. He noted the increase in the incidence of upper respiratory tract infections; according to Ghebreyesus, about 180 thousand people suffer from them in Gaza.
He also noted WHO’s ongoing work to improve disease control in Gaza, as well as supply the region with water, food and medicine.
Earlier, UN Children’s Fund spokesman James Elder said that Gaza had become a “cemetery for children.” Also in a joint document by the UN Children’s Fund, the World Health Organization and UNRWA, it was stated that in the Gaza Strip, women are forced to give birth on the streets and in shelters, while hospitals are overcrowded. It was also noted that the work of medical institutions was seriously disrupted due to bombing, mass displacement of residents, and lack of water, electricity, medicine and food. UN agencies note that this threatens the lives and health of mothers and children.
