White House: balloon incident has not changed US attitude towards China

White House spokesman John Kirby said at a briefing on Monday that the balloon incident had not changed US attitudes towards China. Washington, he said, still sees Beijing as a strategic competitor and wants to avoid conflict with it.
“This is a very important bilateral relationship, probably one of the most important in the world,” Kirby said.
He added that the incident with the balloon, which was shot down by the United States over its territory, did not contribute to the improvement of relations, in particular, it affected the refusal of Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to travel to China.
