WhatsApp will not launch channels in Russia due to risk of blocking

First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy Anton Gorelkin said that the WhatsApp messenger will not roll out the channel function in our country, which could lead to blocking of the messenger in Russia.
According to the parliamentarian, WhatsApp will not open the functionality of public channels for Russian users. However, as he noted, there is no official confirmation of this yet. Gorelkin noticed that the publication in “one Dutch newspaper” contained a rather vague disclaimer: “the product will not be available in the near future.”
The Moscow Times was the first to report WhatsApp’s refusal of channels in the Russian Federation (the website of the Russian version of the publication is blocked in Russia) with reference to a representative of Meta (recognized as extremist in Russia and banned).
It is known that Roskomnadzor allowed the messenger to be blocked due to the possibility of distributing prohibited information through channels.
