Geologists have discovered a climate “bomb” near Spitsbergen
Geologists recently drilled a well under the Spitsbergen archipelago and discovered a strange phenomenon. Writes about this LIFE.
It is noted that all the wells, of which there are more than 500, go deep into the “perpetual”, but in fact permafrost. And thanks to them, scientists have a good idea of where this permafrost extends and what happens to it.
According to scientists, when they drilled a well in Longyearbyen, they heard a “boiling” sound coming from it. Out of curiosity, they decided to hold devices above it that are triggered by explosive levels of methane. And they worked immediately.
Experts suspect that the “bottom,” which is the base of the permafrost, is wavy, because only under this condition can methane reserves accumulate below: the ripples create “traps” for the gas.
There are estimates that the total reserves of methane in the Arctic depths amount to more than a trillion tons. Scientists believe that if there is not enough force to keep all this methane underground, we will get a real climate bomb.
