Vasily Vyacheslavovich Utkin was born on March 6, 1972 in Balashikha in the family of a physicist and doctor. He graduated from four courses at the Faculty of Philology of the Moscow Pedagogical State University, but went on academic leave on the eve of the last exam and never returned to study.

In 1992, he got his first job on television, becoming an editor in the program of journalist Alexander Politkovsky “Politburo”. In 1994, he began collaborating with the NTV television company, becoming the host of the information and analytical television program “Football Club”, which he hosted intermittently from 1994 to 2012. In 2004 and 2005, he won the TEFI Award in the “Best Sports Commentator” category.

Over the years, he was a sports columnist and columnist for many publications, such as Kommersant, RBC, Gazeta.ru, Izvestia, GQ, Sports.ru, Soviet Sport and others. From 2000 to 2022, he regularly appeared as a guest on the “Football Club” program on Ekho Moskvy radio, and also hosted the “Morning Spread” analytical program there from 2008 to 2010. From 2010 to 2015, he was editor-in-chief of the NTV-Plus sports channels, in 2015–2016 he worked on the Match TV channel, and in 2016–2017 on the Eurosport channel.

He also acted as a host of entertainment programs, such as the music show “Earth-Air” (TV-6), “Wall to Wall” (Channel One), the reality show “Hunger” (TNT), “Big Question” ( STS) and others.

In 2004, he took part several times as a member of the jury of the KVN Major League. From 2007 to 2010, he was a member of Alexey Blinov’s team in the game “What? Where? When?”. He is one of five commentators for Russian versions of FIFA games (2007–2010). In 2016, he became the voice of the Yandex.Navigator mobile application. In 2017, he became a sponsor and owner of the amateur football club “Egrisi”. Since 2018, he has been releasing the “Football Club” program on his author’s YouTube channel (more than 600 thousand subscribers).

He published two books – “Play Football! Notes from a sports commentator” and “The fuss around the ball. Notes of a sports commentator.” He starred in the films “Election Day”, “What Men Talk About”, “Difficult Teens” and others. Acted as a voice actor.

On March 19, 2024, he was taken to the cardiology department of the 1st City Hospital in Moscow, where he later died. The preliminary cause of death is reported to be pulmonary embolism.
