July 4 in Chechnya unknown attacked against Novaya Gazeta journalist Elena Milashina and lawyer Alexander Nemov. Milashina Elena Valerievna was born on October 28, 1978 in Dalnegorsk (Primorsky Territory). In 2001 she graduated from the Faculty of Journalism of Lomonosov Moscow State University.

Since 1997 she has worked as a correspondent for Novaya Gazeta. It became known after the publication of articles about the sunken submarine “Kursk”. For them, she received the Golden Pen of Russia award from the Union of Journalists of Russia.

Subsequently, she conducted journalistic investigations, including the terrorist attack in Beslan, the deaths of Anna Politkovskaya and Natalya Estemirova, the torture of gays in Chechnya, and the kidnapping of the wife of a retired federal judge, Saydi Yangulbaev.

Has many international awards. In October 2009, Elena Milashina received the award of the international human rights organization Human Rights Watch, in March 2013 – the US State Department’s “Brave Women of the World” award. The prize was presented to her by the first lady of the United States, Michelle Obama. In November 2017, Novaya Gazeta was awarded the Andrei Sakharov Freedom Prize for a series of publications by Elena Milashina on the oppression of gays in Chechnya. In December 2020, the journalist received the Reporters Without Borders award.

In February 2006, she became the victim of an attack in Beslan. In April 2012, she was robbed and beaten in Balashikha (Moscow Region). In June 2015, she faced death threats while working on an article about the wedding of the head of the police department of the Nozhai-Yurt district of Chechnya with a minor from the village of Baitarki. In February 2020, in Grozny (Chechnya), she was beaten together with lawyer Marina Dubrovina. Shortly before that, she wrote that Chechnya lacked masks and protective equipment for doctors, and some hospitals were closed for quarantine.

In February 2022 Elena Milashina was leaving on a business trip outside of Russia, the decision was made by the editors of Novaya Gazeta due to “numerous personal threats” against her from “prominent representatives of Chechnya”.
