Pele is best known as a Brazilian footballer, with whom he became world champion three times (1958, 1962, 1970). He is the only footballer in the world to have won three FIFA World Cups. Pele played 92 matches for the national team and scored 77 goals. In total, he scored over 1280 goals in his career. He was repeatedly recognized as the best football player of the 20th century and shares the FIFA Player of the Century award with Argentinean Diego Maradona. In 2014, he received the honorary FIFA Ballon d’Or. After the end of his football career, Pele was involved in business, politics and charity. In 1992 he became the UN Ambassador for the Environment. From 1995-1998 he was the Minister of Sports of Brazil.
In September 2021, Pele underwent surgery to remove a tumor on the right side of his colon.
