Salagaev Eduard Mikhailovich was born on October 3, 1946 in Samarkand in Uzbekistan. In 1967 he graduated from the philological faculty of Samarkand State University.

From 1967 to 1969 he worked as a senior editor and announcer in the Committee for Radio Broadcasting and Television of the Samarkand region. In 1969-1972 he was an editor, and then deputy executive secretary in the Samarkand newspaper “Lenin’s Way”. In 1972 he was the executive secretary of the Tashkent newspaper Komsomolets Uzbekistan.

In 1973 he moved to Moscow and took the position of an instructor in the Propaganda and Agitation Department of the Komsomol Central Committee. Since 1975, he was deputy head of the main editorial office of youth programs at the USSR State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting (Gosteleradio). In 1980-1984 he was the editor-in-chief of the Yunost radio station. From 1984 to 1988, he headed the main editorial office of programs for the youth of the State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company, took part in the creation of the programs “Vzglyad”, “Peace and Youth” and “12th Floor” as an author and presenter. In 1988-1990, he headed the main editorial office of the information of the State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company. He was the host of the weekly analytical program “Seven Days” and the editor-in-chief of the information program “Time”.

In 1990 he became the general director of the fourth program of the central television. In February 1991, he was elected Chairman of the Council of the Union of Journalists of the USSR, and in June of the same year – People’s Deputy of the USSR. From August to December 1991 he was the first deputy chairman and general director of the All-Union State Television and Radio Company. After that, until July 1992, he held similar positions in the Russian state television and radio company Ostankino.

From 1992 to 1996, and also from 1997 to 2001, he was president of the Moscow Independent Broadcasting Corporation (MNVK). In 1992–2001, he served as chairman of the board of directors of the first Russian private TV channel, TV-6.

In 1995, he created and headed the National Association of Broadcasters (NAT). In the same year he joined the Academy of Russian Television. In 1996-1997 he headed the All-Russian State Television and Radio Company (VGTRK). At the same time, he led the information and journalistic program Open News on the RTR TV channel (Russia-1) together with Svetlana Sorokina. In 1999, he was deputy chairman of the board of directors of the Public Russian Television.

In 2001, he founded the non-profit organization Foundation for the Development of Television and Radio Broadcasting, Electronic Media and Internet Technologies. In 2006-2008, he was a member of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation, was a co-chairman of the intercommission working group on consumer rights protection and intellectual property, the fight against counterfeit products and falsification. In 2009, he became artistic director of the around-the-clock cable TV channel Psychology21.

He is the author of the cycle of documentaries Mystical Journeys (2008–2009), as well as documentaries Optina Pustyn. Warriors of the Lord (2010) and Indian Yogis Among Us and We Among Them (2011). Author of When Journalists Were Free (2021).

Honored Journalist of the Russian Federation. He was awarded the Orders of Friendship, “For Services to the Fatherland” III and IV degrees. Laureate of the State Prize of the USSR in the field of literature, art and architecture, the Prize of the Government of the Russian Federation in the field of mass media, received a special TEFI prize.
