Alexey Rostislavovich Kim was born on September 21, 1958. Graduated from the Moscow Higher Military Combined Arms Command School (1979), the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces (2003). Candidate of military sciences, professor.

Since 1979 he served in Afghanistan, during the civil war in Tajikistan he was deputy chief of the operational department of the headquarters of the combined arms army. Since the beginning of the second Chechen war, he served as chief of staff – first deputy commander of the western direction of the Joint Group of Forces in the North Caucasus. Since 1999, he was the head of the operational department – deputy chief of staff of the 58th combined arms army of the North Caucasian military district.

In 2008–2014, he was deputy head of the Combined Arms Academy of the RF Armed Forces for educational and scientific work. From 2014 to 2019, he was the Deputy Chief of the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces for academic work. In 2017, during the military operation in Syria, he served as head of the Center for the Reconciliation of Warring Parties. Since 2019, he has been Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Ground Forces for Peacekeeping Activities.

In November 2021, by decree of President Vladimir Putin, he was awarded the rank of Colonel General. Since September 2022 – Chief of the General Staff – First Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces.

He was awarded the orders “For Services to the Fatherland” III and II degrees with swords, the Order of Courage, Alexander Nevsky, “For Military Merit”, a number of medals.
