Sergeev Alexander Mikhailovich was born on August 2, 1955 in the village of Buturlino (Nizhny Novgorod Region). Graduated from Lobachevsky Gorky State University with a degree in radiophysics (1977).

Since 1977 he has been working at the Institute of Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Nizhny Novgorod. He began his scientific career as a trainee researcher, since 1979 – junior researcher, since 1985 – senior. Since 2003 he has been a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 2011 he was appointed Deputy Director for Research at the Institute of Applied Physics, since 2015 he has been the Director of the Institute. In 2013, he joined the informal club “July 1” (it includes scientists who disagree with the reform of the Russian Academy of Sciences). In 2016 he became an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences with a degree in physics and astronomy.

In May 2017, he was nominated as a candidate for the post of President of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In September of the same year, speaking on the eve of the vote before the general meeting of academicians, uttered a speech in which he gave a tough assessment of the state of Russian science and proposed his own program to correct the situation, including the need to increase funding for a scientific organization by 60 billion rubles. On September 26, 2017, he won the election: in the first round, he won 681 votes out of 1,596, ahead of his closest competitor, scientific director of the Institute of Oceanology Robert Nigmatulin, by 405 votes. In the second round, Mr. Sergeev received 1045 votes, and Mr. Nigmatulin – 412.

On September 27, by decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin, he was approved in office for five years.

In February 2022, he headed the Council for Regional Policy of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

In July 2022, the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences approved four candidates for the presidency of a scientific organization, which, in addition to the current head Alexander Sergeev, included Academician-Secretary of the Department of Nanotechnology and Information Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences Gennady Krasnikov, Director of the Institute of Thermal Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Dmitry Markovich and Scientific Director of the Institute of Oceanology Robert Nigmatulin .

On September 1, 2022, at a meeting of the Presidium of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, he proposed to form a permanent analytical body to interact with law enforcement agencies in the event of criminal prosecution of scientists.

On September 19, 2022, Alexander Sergeev withdrew from the election of a new head of the academy; earlier, at a meeting of the Presidium of the SB RAS, he supported the candidacy of Dmitry Markovich.

He is the founder and head of the scientific school “Femtosecond Optics, Nonlinear Dynamics of Optical Systems and Highly Sensitive Optical Measurements”. Specialist in laser physics, femtosecond optics, plasma physics and biophotonics. Author of more than 350 scientific papers.

Professor of Nizhny Novgorod State University named after Lobachevsky. Member of the Presidium of the Council for Science and Education under the President of the Russian Federation, the FASO Scientific Coordinating Council and the RFBR Council, is a member of the editorial boards of the journals “Uspekhi fizicheskikh nauk” and “Izvestiya vuzov. Radiophysics”. Expert of the Moscow Economic Forum.

He was awarded the State Prize of the Russian Federation in the field of science and technology, the Order of Honor, the Gruber International Prize in Cosmology. Doctor of Physical Sciences (dissertation topic – “Nonlinear wave processes in the generation of ultrashort optical pulses and the interaction of strong optical fields with matter”).
