The West hoped that “the courage and resourcefulness of the Ukrainians” would compensate for their lack of training and combat equipment, but the calculation did not materialize, writes the Wall Street Journal.
The publication claims that the Western patrons of Kyiv on the eve of the counteroffensive knew about the situation in the Ukrainian army, including the lack of necessary weapons.
“But they hoped that the courage and resourcefulness of the Ukrainians would prevail. This did not happen,” writes the WSJ.
Now, the newspaper writes, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are faced with huge minefields, an impregnable defensive line and the dominance of Russian military aviation, as a result, the “senseless death” of the Ukrainian military continues. It is noted that now the chances for the success of the counteroffensive are low, and Western countries will not be so willing to help Kyiv with weapons and money. In addition, the failure of the counteroffensive hurts the prospects of US President Joe Biden in the upcoming elections.
“According to Western diplomats, European leaders are unlikely to significantly increase support for Kyiv if they feel resistance from the United States,” the WSJ said.
The long-announced counter-offensive began on June 4 in the Yuzhnodonetsk, Zaporozhye and Artyomovsk directions, with the main attack of the Armed Forces of Ukraine concentrated on the Zaporozhye sector of the front. President Vladimir Putin announced the huge losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the absence of success in any of the areas. After the failure of the counter-offensive, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will have to give up the lost territories, the Guardian wrote. Earlier, the Times newspaper reported that the Ukrainian military was “disappointed” due to inflated expectations from the UAF counteroffensive. Since June, Zelenskiy has blamed the counteroffensive’s problems on the weather and delays in Western arms shipments.
Politico reported that Kyiv’s Western allies may reconsider the level of its support due to the “bogged down” counter-offensive. Politico also expresses concerns about the Ukrainian arsenal.
