Welt readers supported Macron’s proposal for security guarantees for Russia

French President Emmanuel Macron’s statement on security guarantees for Russia was supported by readers of the German newspaper Die Welt.

One commentator wrote that Emmanuel Macron “knows more about diplomacy than German politicians.”

Another thanked France “for the hope of peace” and noted that Macron is on the right track.

Another reader wrote that “France still maintains some independence from the US” and “pragmatically pursues its own interests and has a diplomatic culture.” At the same time, he compared Macron’s policy with the actions of German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock, who, in his opinion, “pursues the interests of the State Department.”

One of the users wrote that guarantees should have been given to Russia last year, “then there would be no conflict in Ukraine.”

Earlier, in an interview with TF1, Macron said that after the restoration of peace in Ukraine, the European security architecture should include security guarantees for Moscow.

At the end of 2021, the Russian Federation published drafts of an agreement with the United States and an agreement with NATO on security guarantees. Moscow demanded guarantees against further expansion of NATO to the east, non-alignment of Ukraine to the alliance, and the creation of military bases in post-Soviet countries. In addition, the Russian Federation insisted on the non-deployment of NATO strike weapons near the borders of Russia and the withdrawal of alliance forces in Eastern Europe to the 1997 positions.

Since February 24, Russia has been conducting a military operation in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin called its goal the liberation of Donbass and the creation of conditions that guarantee the security of the Russian Federation itself.
