Russian weightlifters will not take part in the Grand Prix stage in Cuba, as they did not sign the declarations that were necessary for admission. The declarations were related to the Ukrainian conflict, the press service of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) reports.
The IWF has previously agreed to allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to compete under a number of conditions. One of the conditions was the signing of declarations of political views, for example, that the participants had no connection with the armed forces.
“At the end of the deadline (May 15, 2023), no signed declarations were received from athletes and support personnel with a Russian passport,” the IWF said. They added that the Russians automatically lost the opportunity to get to the Grand Prix stage.
At the same time, 13 Belarusian athletes were still allowed to compete.
