Electric scooters have become a popular means of transportation for Muscovites. Their widespread rental made transport affordable, and most importantly, solved the problem of traffic jams for many. But in the use of this means of transportation there are “pitfalls” that you should be aware of.

Young people were the first to appreciate the advantages of electric scooters: fast, convenient, with a breeze. True, my far from young girlfriend also cannot do without it, she drives it to the store, to the pharmacy, and even to the theater. But still, for advice on how to properly use this modern transport, I turned to my grandson, an experienced scooter rider:
“Before the trip, it is enough to master the elementary rules of driving and not to forget about safety – you should carefully look at the road, suddenly some kind of obstacle will come across. It’s better to go around it, ”advises the grandson. According to him, it is better to start moving from a minimum speed.
And so I began the first movement in my life along a quiet, not at all busy alley of the park. My grandson has his own scooter, it is not very heavy. But moving on it is easy, I try not to be distracted and look at the road.
“Granny, you need to know about the rules of the road,” he says seriously, like a real instructor. – It’s your safety.
On his desk, I saw this little book with traffic rules.
“I will definitely learn,” I promise.
And this is a very true remark, because very often, due to the violation of elementary traffic rules, you can get into a real accident.
Learn the rules of the road
Devices less than 250 watts should move along sidewalks, pedestrian or bicycle paths, if the above is not in this area, then along the side of the road or along the edge of the carriageway towards the flow of cars. Funds over 250 watts – on the road on the right edge of the carriageway or in the lane for cyclists. The devices can accelerate up to 60 km/h.
“But it is important to remember that the speed limit for e-scooters is 20 km/h.”
When driving at night, you must wear reflective vests. There are other restrictions as well. For example, if the movement on the sidewalk interferes with pedestrians or poses a danger to them, then it is necessary to reduce the speed of the scooter to the speed of pedestrians.
What else to remember:
- A traffic light signal in the form of a pedestrian or a cyclist also applies to the scooter driver.
- In the yards, electric scooters have the right to ride everywhere, and car drivers must give way to them. But scooters should not create unreasonable interference with cars.
- For persons over 14 years of age, the rules establish the same possibility of movement on road sections as for cyclists. And under the age of 14, it is forbidden to ride an electric scooter onto the roadway and the roadside.
- On the roadway, electric scooters can only ride in one row (like cyclists).
- It is forbidden to drive electric scooters under the influence of alcohol or drugs (including after medication).
- It is forbidden to ride an electric scooter without hands (it is possible with one hand on the steering wheel).
- Passengers cannot be carried on an electric scooter.
Be careful with recharging
The biggest problem with electric scooters is that the device can catch fire completely unpredictably. There were cases of fires while driving, while charging, and also just at rest.
Therefore, the first signs of a possible fire cannot be ignored: the smells of melting or burning. Experts recommend operating electric scooters in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, without overloading at the limit.
For recharging, you should always use original devices, connect charging only to power outlets, do not leave the device unattended.
If the scooter is not rented, but purchased in a store, you should carefully consider its choice. Choose a scooter from a well-known manufacturer and purchase it in a specialized store. The vehicle must be accompanied by instructions, a warranty card and a certificate of quality.
