“We buried you”: a living soldier of the Wagner PMC was buried and immortalized in a memorial

An incredible story happened to a fighter from the Wagner PMC, 44-year-old Sergei K. from Buryatia. A former criminal, sentenced to 15 years, signed up for a PMC and volunteered to defend the Motherland, but after being wounded he ended up in the hospital. While the fighter was undergoing treatment, he was buried in his homeland and even immortalized in a memorial to those killed during the Northern Military District.
The fighter had to go to the district court to cancel the death certificate. The court ruled in favor of the plaintiff, but the decision has not yet entered into legal force, so the fighter is formally listed as dead.
As MK learned, a 44-year-old resident of the Kabansky district of Buryatia was sentenced to 15 years on serious charges back in 2019. He was given the opportunity to change his destiny after three years of imprisonment – the man was offered to repay his debt to the Motherland. Without thinking twice, Sergei agreed to go to the front as a volunteer.
In April 2023, at one of the most dangerous sectors of the front, Sergei was wounded in the leg and was sent to the hospital. The fighter told the hospital workers his first and last name and showed his badge.
– First he was admitted to a hospital in Lugansk, then transferred to Rostov-on-Don. There was more than one hospital there. He was undergoing treatment, but did not contact his loved ones. There was no time for that, and I didn’t want to disturb them again,” said the fighter’s lawyer Andrei Kibirev.
Already in July, Sergei K. called one of the sisters. The answer of a loved one simply stunned him.
“The sister, hearing her brother’s voice, first fell into a state of shock,” lawyer Kibireva tells MK. “Then followed something like this: “We’ve already buried you. Soon it will be 40 days.”
It turned out that while the volunteer was undergoing treatment, relatives received sad news from the front – they were informed that Sergei had died in the LPR. A galvanized coffin was soon brought home. The management of the PMC presented a death certificate.
In September, the lawyer contacted the structures of the former Wagner to assist in the “resurrection” of the fighter.
– I called Moscow to find out who was buried after all, my client is alive. I asked that the death certificate be annulled… But they couldn’t help me. Moreover, the question of monetary compensation arose. The fact is that the soldier’s family has already been paid a fairly large amount, which is due in the event of the death of a serviceman – almost six million.
The lawyer had to contact the local prosecutor’s office. They immediately accepted the application and began to look into it. Sergei, in a sense, was lucky that he came from a place not so remote – his fingerprints were stored in the Ministry of Internal Affairs database. After they were compared, doubts that the man was buried by mistake disappeared.
On October 19, the Kabansky District Court of the Republic of Buryatia satisfied the claim of a former fighter of the Wagner PMC.
“The court, having examined the case materials, having listened to the interested parties – his sisters, the witness, taking into account the match of his fingerprints with the data stored in the database of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs in his name, came to the conclusion that the applicant’s demands were justified, the registry record of his death was annulled,” – says the court materials.
However, the decision will have to wait another month for it to come into force. In the meantime, Sergei is waiting for a decision and making plans for his life.
– In the court of my client, the presiding judge asked whether he had reconsidered his views on life, because he was convicted on serious charges. He replied: what he saw at the front changed him very much. After receiving his passport, he plans to get a job, most likely on a rotational basis. For now, formally, he is still listed as dead, so he cannot work,” the lawyer said.
According to the defense attorney, his client, despite such a somersault of fate, does not lose heart.
– He tries to treat the situation with humor. He recently visited his grave, and says that he did not expect that he would be buried so well. And he was indeed buried with due honors and was even immortalized on a memorial to those killed during the Northern Military District in our area.
By the way, we also managed to find out who was buried instead of Sergei. It turned out that the same fighter was buried in his grave, but from the North Baikal region of Buryatia.
