NATO countries have decided not to extend an invitation to Ukraine to become a member of the North Atlantic Alliance at their July summit in Vilnius. According to The Washington Post, however, the possibility of increasing interaction with Kiev and the potential setting of terms for its entry into the military bloc is being discussed.
Official sources told the newspaper that “despite Kiev’s calls, there is a consensus among the 31 members of the alliance that NATO will not send an official invitation to join Ukraine during the July 11-12 meeting.”
The source added that Eastern European countries want to see concrete steps towards this goal, including potential commitments regarding the timing of Ukraine’s entry.
The USA and part of the Western European countries are in favor of small steps in this direction.
