Wagner veterans asked the governor of St. Petersburg to perpetuate the memory of Prigozhin

The interregional public organization “League for the Protection of the Interests of Veterans of Local Wars and Military Conflicts,” created by PMC “Wagner,” appealed to the Governor of St. Petersburg, Alexander Beglov, with a request to facilitate the installation of a monument to businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin, who died in August of this year. Kommersant has an appeal signed by the chairman of the board of the organization, Dmitry Podolsky.
The author of the appeal calls Mr. Prigozhin, who was born and lived most of his life in St. Petersburg, an outstanding personality and lists his titles and awards. Among them: Hero of the Russian Federation of the Order of Merit for the Fatherland (I, II and IV degrees), two Orders of Courage and others.
The author of the appeal notes that Bar Service LLC previously contacted the city committee for culture and asked for permission to install a memorial structure on the building in which the entrepreneur’s office was located for 20 years. The building is located at the address: Lieutenant Schmidt embankment, 7. It is owned by the company. The committee refused. Representatives of the public organization also approached the committee with a request for permission to rename one of the St. Petersburg streets in honor of Yevgeny Prigozhin. They were also refused.
In this regard, Mr. Podolsky asked the governor to instruct the Committee on Culture and the Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture to prepare possible options for perpetuating the memory of Yevgeny Prigozhin. The organization is interested in erecting a monument, renaming the street and installing a commemorative plaque on the building where the entrepreneur’s office was located.
In April 2015, the Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture clarified the procedure for installing works of monumental art in St. Petersburg. The committee explained that decisions on the installation of monuments that may affect the architectural appearance of the city are made on the basis of the St. Petersburg government decree of August 21, 2009 No. 944 “On the procedure for interaction between the executive bodies of state power of St. Petersburg when installing works of monumental art in St. Petersburg”. The document states that a monument to an outstanding personality can be erected only after 30 years have passed from the date of her death. In exceptional cases, the decision may be influenced by the Governor of St. Petersburg.
