Signatories of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) code participating in the Friendship Games may face consequences, said WADA head Witold Banka.
According to him, the organization is concerned about the plans for the Friendship Games regarding the issue of combating doping. He also said that the national anti-doping agency does not comply with WADA requirements and “the integrity of the competition is at risk.”
“The possible participation of signatories in this event may entail consequences,” he said.
Earlier, WADA General Director Olivier Niggli said that Russia does not have the right to organize international competitions due to the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) not complying with the anti-doping code. The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, recommended Niggli to address the issue of compliance with the doping standard of transgender people who take part in international competitions and stated that Russia will hold the Friendship Games in accordance with existing international standards.
The Friendship Games are scheduled to take place from September 15 to 29, 2024 in Moscow and Yekaterinburg. The prize fund of the competition should be 4.6 billion rubles.
