Russian State Duma deputy and Soviet sports star Vyacheslav Fetisov arrived on a working visit to Chukotka. The trip program includes visits to sports and environmental facilities, as well as meetings with the public, Chukotka news agency reports.

Immediately after arriving in the district, Vyacheslav Fetisov headed to the village of Coal Mines. There, the State Duma deputy visited the sports and leisure complex, awarded schoolchildren participating in the school children’s camp with certificates of honor and met with the hockey players of the Polar Bears club.

The arrival of Vyacheslav Fetisov to the region coincided with the solemn opening ceremony of one of the main sports holidays – the district athletics competition “Running in the Arctic”, which took place on Saturday, July 22. The famous athlete wished the participants good luck and expressed confidence that sports in the district would continue to develop rapidly.

Also, Vyacheslav Fetisov handed over to the head of the district, Vladislav Kuznetsov, his hockey jersey with the letter “K”, on which he wrote with his own hand: “Good luck and further victories!”

On the same day, the deputy visited a number of sports facilities in the city. In particular, he was shown a martial arts hall, an indoor skating rink and a gym on Chukotskaya Street, 15. As Vyacheslav Fetisov noted, sports facilities require re-equipment and modernization. The deputy assured that he was ready to help raise federal funds for these purposes, as well as for training world-class athletes in Chukotka.

“We should not have discrimination on a geographical basis, as well as on any other. I’m glad the kids are doing it for free. What I heard and saw today is a very important moment. It seems to me that we should aim to finally have an athlete, world champion, Olympic champion in Chukotka. In order to get it, you need a completely different funding. And now we need to take care of it,” Vyacheslav Fetisov shared his opinion.

Vyacheslav Fetisov also met with the sports community of Anadyr and Coal Mines. Members of the hockey team “Dynamo-Anadyr” were especially happy to talk with the legend of world sports.

Another purpose of the deputy’s visit to the region will be to discuss issues of nature conservation in the Arctic. Vyacheslav Fetisov is the first deputy chairman of the Duma Committee on Ecology, Natural Resources and Environmental Protection. On Sunday, July 23, he plans to inspect the municipal solid waste dump in Anadyr, after which he will participate in a workshop on the implementation of projects in the field of ecology and nature protection in the ChAO.
