Vučić warned of the danger of violent clashes in Kosovo

The danger of a military conflict in Kosovo due to Pristina’s unilateral steps is close and serious, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said at a special meeting of the country’s parliament.

“We are at a moment when Serbia, due to the steps taken by Pristina, is facing significant security challenges. I want to say that the presence of the special forces of the Pristina police in the north of Kosovo and Metohija is increasing, ”Vučić emphasized (quote according to RIA Novosti).

The President noted that the Serbian side was not to blame for the current crisis situation, and noted that his words could be confirmed by representatives of the Kosovo Serbs. Belgrade “remains committed to dialogue,” he added.

Vučić previously declaredthat Serbia will never recognize the self-proclaimed Republic of Kosovo. He also noted that negotiations between Belgrade and EU special representatives are ongoing, including the discussion of other regional issues.

At the end of July, the situation in Kosovo escalated due to the decision of Pristina to abandon the use of Serbian documents. Vucic then said that Pristina plans to invalidate Serbian documents in Kosovo.

In turn, the authorities of Pristina reported that all Serbs entering the unrecognized entity would receive a temporary border crossing document. This announcement was made in response to Belgrade’s unwillingness to recognize certificates issued in Kosovo.

At the end of August, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, announced the settlement by Serbia and the partially recognized Republic of Kosovo of differences over the movement of citizens across the border. He reported that Serbia had agreed to abolish travel/entry documents for Kosovo ID holders and Kosovo committed itself not to introduce them for Serbian ID holders.
