Voting in the presidential elections in Uzbekistan ended at 20:00 (18:00 Moscow time). Polling stations began work at 8:00.
In the CEC of the republic notedthat the turnout by 11:00, three hours after the opening of the polling stations, exceeded the required threshold and amounted to 33.54%.
Earlier observers from the CEC of Russia reported about the lack of comments on the ongoing elections. As noted by the deputy chairman of the CEC, Nikolai Bulaev, during the voting, a system of electronic control over visiting polling stations was used, which “makes it possible to exclude double voting.” The Russian CEC also noted that 797 people from 47 states and 15 international organizations were accredited as election observers.
Early elections in the republic started today, July 9. At the same time, on June 28, early voting began in Uzbekistan, which lasted until July 5. Such elections were made possible by the results of a referendum to amend the constitution in May.
According to the changes, the incumbent President Shavkat Mirziyoyev received the right to run for this post twice more and, if he wins the current and future elections, he will be able to rule until 2037. His mandate, before the amendments, expired in 2026.
Rivals of the incumbent head of state are Ulugbek Inoyatov, ex-Minister of Education and leader of the opposition left-wing People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Court Robakhon Makhmudova (representative of the Adolat Social Democratic Party), and Abdushukur Khamzaev, a candidate from the Ecological Party.
