The prosecutor’s office of Vorkuta (Komi Republic) organized an inspection in the city, as residents have been suffocating for three weeks now from acrid smoke due to a fire at a landfill.
The incident took place on December 27, 2022. “Our colleagues in the Arctic found that there were two fires of garbage placed there at the municipal waste landfill. The open fire has now been contained, but the smoldering of waste continues,” Natalia Spiridonova, senior assistant to the Komi prosecutor, told Kommersant.
According to her, the supervisory agency will determine whether the authorities of the municipality have committed violations of environmental legislation. “The task set by the leadership of the regional prosecutor’s office is not only to find out all the causes and circumstances that led to the fires, but also to identify the perpetrators,” the Kommersant’s interlocutor clarified.
Ms. Spiridonova explained that during the investigation, the prosecutor’s office would also evaluate the actions of the municipal unitary enterprise “Polygon” – it was he who was entrusted by the local government with the operation of a dangerous facility.
“In addition, the Vorkuta prosecutor’s office will check the completeness of the city administration’s fulfillment of its powers. Talking about Art. 8 of federal law No. 89 (“On production and consumption waste”),” said a representative of the Komi prosecutor’s office, adding that the progress and results of the check are under the control of the prosecutor of the republic.
