Russia and Cuba should expand cooperation in the humanitarian sphere and education, stated State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin at a meeting with Chairman of the National Assembly of People’s Power (local parliament) Juan Esteban Lazo Hernandez. The meeting took place within the framework of the first international parliamentary conference “Russia – Latin America”.
According to him, new formats of interaction between the two countries have already shown their effectiveness, as evidenced, in particular, by a six-fold increase in trade turnover. This happens primarily because of the work of the presidents of the two countries, Volodin added.
“Decisions have been made that will allow us to further build relationships, jointly develop the economy, bring closer positions <...> It is right to expand cooperation in the humanitarian sphere and education,” the press service of the lower house quotes him as saying.
The priority areas for joint projects are, Volodin noted, resource extraction and processing, tourism, solar energy and cane sugar production.
Last April, Volodin visited Cuba on an official visit, where the first meeting of the commission on cooperation between the State Duma and the Cuban parliament took place. In June, Cuban Prime Minister Nicolás Marrero Cruz visited Russia. met including with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Russian President noted the allied nature of bilateral relations between Russia and Cuba and expressed hope for their further development in a number of areas, including in the field of energy and tourism.
