Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Sakhalin Region Vladimir Yushchuk met with Alexander Romankov, Honored Master of Sports of the USSR in fencing, winner of five Olympic medals, ten-time world champion, seventeen-time champion of the USSR, winner of the Robert Feyerik Prize “The Best Fencer of the World” (FIE, 1985) to discuss the development of fencing in the island region. The meeting was also attended by the Minister of Sports of the Sakhalin Region Artem Podshivalov and director of the sports school of martial arts, president of the regional fencing federation Leonid Kim, the press service of the regional ministry of sports reported.
“You have a good sports base, many modern complexes and facilities for the development of many sports. In Belarus, such infrastructure, as a rule, is in large cities, like Minsk, but here, on the very edge of the country, children and adults have the opportunity to find something they like and develop in this direction, – the eminent fencer shared his impressions. – During the time that I talked and held master classes with athletes, I saw that the chances of reviving this Olympic sport on Sakhalin are very high. The main thing is to give children constant practice, to compete as often as possible with rivals of different levels of training and, of course, to learn from the masters – this is a very important point.”
Vladimir Yushchuk, in turn, thanked Alexander Romankov for the visit and the great work he is doing on Sakhalin to develop fencing.
“This is a very original sport, aimed not only at physical education, but also at developing the speed of thinking and tactics. Thank you for responding to the invitation and sharing your experience with island athletes and coaches. I myself will attend the upcoming master classes with great pleasure,” said the deputy chairman.
Vladimir Yushchuk presented the eminent guest with a plaque of gratitude, Alexander Romankov also presented the Deputy Chairman with a memorable gift.
Tomorrow, September 5, the Olympic champion in fencing will visit his small homeland – Korsakov, where he will communicate with the administration and the sports community.
On September 6 and 7, Alexander Romankov will conduct a series of seminars at the Vostok training center. Beginning September 6 at 10:00 and 17:00, September 7 – 10:00 and 15:00.
