President Vladimir Putin launched traffic on the remaining sections of the M-12 Vostok highway from Moscow to Kazan. Travel for passenger cars along the entire road costs 4.8 thousand rubles, the tariffs were previously announced by the state company Avtodor.
Mr. Putin said that in such a short period of time—three years—infrastructure projects of such a scale have never been implemented in Russia. He called it “a good guide to the future” and proof that “we can and are ready to build with quality, faster and more.” “This applies to social and industrial facilities, housing, railways, and other infrastructure. It is imperative to increase the pace of the construction complex, our related industries are ready for this,” Mr. Putin said via video link.
The President noted that as part of the project, large-scale and technically complex objects were built, such as a bridge across the Volga near Kazan, more than 3 km long. Now a journey of 800 km will take approximately 6.5 hours – almost half as much as before.
Vladimir Putin also said that by the end of 2023, more than 31 thousand km of federal, regional and local roads will be built, reconstructed and brought to standard in Russia. Among the priorities, he named the development of the Vostok highway, which is planned to be extended to Yekaterinburg and Tyumen; as part of the project, bypasses of Tyumen, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Kemerovo, and Kansk will be built. He also drew attention to the need to “relieve bottlenecks” on the Russia route in the Far East.
The 810-kilometer M-12 highway has been under construction since 2020. Until now, all sections have been open to traffic except Arzamas-Shumerlya and the last section in Tatarstan (up to the Shali-Bavly highway); Now you can drive through them too. In 2024, the road will be extended to Yekaterinburg due to the reconstruction of M-7 and the construction of new toll sections (Naberezhnye Chelny bypass, Dyurtyuli-Achit). Later M-12 will be extended to Tyumen.
