Vladimir Putin appointed the ex-governor of the Smolensk region as director general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decree on the appointment of Alexey Ostrovsky as Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia. Former CEO Sergei Vyazalov was released from office, he has managed the ministry since 2015.
Alexey Ostrovsky was born in 1976, he is 48 years old. He occupied post of governor of the Smolensk region until March 2023. From 2003 to 2012 he worked as a State Duma deputy of the 4th–6th convocations from the LDPR party. In the State Duma, Mr. Ostrovsky was deputy chairman of the committee on international affairs, then deputy chairman of the committee on information policy, chairman of the committee of the CIS countries, and then headed the committee on affairs of public associations and religious organizations.
At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Director General oversees issues of financial and economic activity, capital construction, management of diplomatic property abroad, placement and servicing of diplomatic missions of foreign states.
Former Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sergei Vyazalov is 67 years old. Mr. Vyazalov moved to an administrative and economic position in the ministry in August 2015. Until that time, he served as vice-governor of St. Petersburg, and previously as deputy head of the presidential department for foreign policy. During his career, Mr. Ostrovsky was awarded the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, IV and III degrees, Alexander Nevsky, Honor and Friendship, laureate of the State Prize of the Russian Federation.
